Currently it is estimated that 250,000 people in UK, including children, approximately 7000 in NI are affected by Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.
All types of people at all ages are affected. Symptoms include Severe and debilitating fatigue with postexertional malaise, painful muscles and joints, nerve pain, disordered sleep, gastric disturbances, poor memory and concentration. In many cases, onset is linked to viral infection, although some people may experience slow onset of symptoms.
25% of sufferers will be severely affected, housebound/bedbound.
All sufferers lives are profoundly changed: in the young, schooling and higher education can be severely disrupted; in the working population, employment becomes impossible for many. For all, social life and family life become restricted and in some cases severely strained.
