Member Spotlight: FND Matters NI

Brain Awareness Week 2024

During Brain Awareness Week 2024, we will be highlighting some of our fantastic member organisations.

Today we are highlighting FND Matters NI.

What is FND?

FND is a common often complex, chronic neurological disorder. Anyone can develop FND and experience a variety of symptoms that can range in severity and intensity. The brain and central nervous system controls the function of all elements of the human body. When people experience Functional Neurological symptoms, the brain networks responsible for particular bodily functions begin to malfunction or misfire, leading to abnormal symptoms in that area of the body. This tends to be a problem with the way the brain is sending or receiving messages to or from the body. Most people who have been diagnosed with FND have more than one symptom and most often have a combination of symptoms. These include limb weakness, Dissociative seizures, functional movement disorder, sensory symptoms, cognitive symptoms, Functional Dystonia, dizziness and speech and swallowing problems. Using the analogy of computer function, the issue is with the software not the computer hard drive.

Who are FND Matters NI?

FND Matters NI was established in 2018 but have been campaigning and raising awareness since 2014. The aim and purpose of the charity is to increase awareness of the needs and issues faced by those with FND, and for Functional Neurological Disorder to be recognised and understood by healthcare professionals and the general public in Northern Ireland. We received charitable status over 2 years ago and continue to campaign for a clear care pathway upon diagnosis. FND Matters NI is the only charity in Northern Ireland supporting people with FND. We are also the forerunner in establishing a specialised FND counselling service. We aim to ensure that those with FND have access to accurate and timely treatment, care and support. We also provide comprehensive FND information which we produced ourselves. We represent people with FND on many health and community committees to enable recognition right across the community. The charity continues to advocate and campaign for the rights to a FND care pathway. FND Matters N. I is managed by a dedicated team of volunteers consisting of both young and older people with lived experience of FND. We will continue to raise awareness, inform and provide support to all those with FND living in Northern Ireland to enable a better quality of life.
